Which Grade?

Students are placed in year groups according to age, based on a 1 September cut off date. Adjustments to placement can be made according to previous school experience or depending on the level of academic ability combined with emotional and social maturity. However, due to the nature of the International Baccalaureate framework, it is fairly unusual for us to move children up or down in grade level, as there is great opportunity for individualized learning within each class.   Please see below for an overview of ISB grade levels for the next several academic years. Below that you'll find an overview of how this compares to standard grade levels in other countries.

Special information regarding Kindergarten:

Children are eligible to start at ISB in the month they turn three. Children who join K1 between September-December may move up to K2 in January if assessed as ready by the K1 team. Children who join between January-March may move up in August if assessed as ready.  Those who join between March-June will remain in K1 for the start of the next academic year (and would be eligible to move up in January). The K2 team will assess students' readiness for K3 in August. Students may join K3 in January and April as well.
